Q. Where are the Hillandale Family of Communities located?
A. Hillandale Communities are located north of Cincinnati, Ohio serving        Butler, Warren, Clermont and Hamilton Counties. Our communities are located in a thriving area just across the street from shopping, churches, entertainment, parks and restaurants. Chesterwood Village is just off of Interstate 75 at the Tylersville Road exit in West Chester. Both Hillandale Health Care and the Birchwood Care Center are located on Hamilton Mason Road, just off the new Michael Fox Highway connecting I-75 to Hamilton.

Q. Who owns/operates the Hillandale Communities?
A. Since 1962, the Dixon family has cared for seniors as if they were part of their own family. Today, you’ll find the Dixon family involved in every aspect of life in the communities. As a locally owned and operated “business”, you’ll find that our residents are an important part of our “family”. They are comforted by the close attention, quick response and respectful care they receive. Our safe, secure communities help make our residents feel as confident and independent as possible. Caring for seniors isn’t just our family’s business, it’s our family’s mission.

Q. What should I look for in a retirement community?
A.  Medicare offers a useful checklist to help you evaluate the retirement community that you are considering. We invite you to print out this list and bring it with you when you visit any of Hillandale’s communities. We will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Q. Are Hillandale communities secure environments?
A. Yes, all communities have 24-hour surveillance and call systems. You can rest assured that you will be safe and will have access to assistance whenever you need it.

Q. What is a continuing care retirement community (CCRC)?
A. A CCRC is a community that offers a full spectrum of care to meet the needs of the individual. This includes independent living for the active, mature adult who is comforted knowing that their future needs are taken care of should they eventually require assistance medically or personally; assisted living for seniors who like their independence but may require assistance with daily medications or personal care; skilled nursing for adults who require assistance and oversight with daily medical care and personal care needs; and short-term rehabilitation for adults recovering from injury or illness. Whatever their individual needs, a CCRC community empowers retired adults by providing them the individual level of support that they need, through housing, medical care, therapies,  social activities and other amenities and services. This enables mature adults to use their abilities to live life to its fullest.

Q. When is the best time to consider moving to a retirement community, and how do I know what level of care is best suited for me?
A. Leaving home is a difficult decision to make, and should be discussed with the ones you care about. On this Web site, you may search for your appropriate level of care based on your individual needs, and find a Hillandale community that will best meet your needs. Our admissions director is also available to help with an individual assessment to determine the most appropriate level of care for your loved one.

Q.  Will I buy or lease my residence?
A.   At Hillandale, you don’t need to spend your hard-earned savings to purchase a residence. Instead, you may lease your independent living, assisted living or nursing care residence. There’s NO ENTRANCE FEE required for Hillandale Communities and our communities are Medicare/Medicaid approved and covered by Anthem Preferred and United Health Care, as well as other private insurance. Q. How often will my family and friends be able to visit me once I move into a residence in one of the Hillandale Communities?
A. There are no visitation limits at any of the Hillandale locations. No matter your level of care, we believe it is important to encourage friends and family to visit as often as they like.

Q. Is there full-time medical care available to me in all of the communities?
A. Yes. A full-time nurse is available for all of our residents 24-hours-a-day. We also have a medical doctor on staff to oversee the care at each of our facilities, as well as specialty physicians who care for our memory-impaired residents or those in need of chronic or acute pain management.

Q. What activities are available for residents to enjoy?
A. Our residents are active and busy! Our activities coordinators seek to find unique and fun opportunities for day-trips, evenings out and pot-luck dinners, just to name a few, for our independent living residents. Activities are provided which are appropriate for all levels of care so each resident can maintain healthy social interaction.

Q. Do you provide transportation to residents?
A. Yes! We provide transportation for residents who may need to leave our campus for physician visits or other appointments. Contact our transportation coordinator for more information.

Q. How are the Hillandale Family of Communities staffed?
A. Hillandale staff members tend to have a long tenure with us. In 45 years of caring for older adults, we have never used outside agency staffing, which means the same team of staff work with each resident 4-5 days per week. Our staff members know residents by name, and understand how to meet their daily needs.

Q. Are Hillandale Communities expensive?
A. We recognize that transitioning from home to a retirement community is a big transition. Like all retirement or nursing facilities, our costs are based on the level and type of care required. Our admissions team will work with you to complete the necessary paperwork and to explain costs and financial options in full. It’s important to look at the total picture to determine the overall value of the care received, taking into account housing, food, utilities, transportation and medical care costs.

Q. How do I schedule an assessment for my loved one or an appointment to tour your communities?
A.  Our admissions director will visit your loved one in their home, extended care facility or hospital to assess their needs and required level of care and then discuss appropriate placement with you as part of the admissions process. Q. Do you offer special care for Alzheimer’s patients?
A. Yes. Our state-of-the-art assisted living facilities at Chelsea Place and Birchwood Care Center are specifically designed for residents with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. Our residents enjoy numerous stations with activities, and multiple seating areas to encourage activity and cognitive function.

Q. Can you accommodate special dietary needs?
A. Yes. We provide supervised nutrition plans from a full-time licensed, registered dietitian to ensure the nutrition needs of our residents are met. Depending on the level of care, multiple meal options are available to best suit your individual tastes, wants and needs.
